![]() Utopia 2020 streams from Friday September 25th on Amazon Prime. I’d rather Amazon had taken the original cast and given us a continuation of that instead, since Channel 4 had cancelled it after two series. Well, that and the fact that similar to the UK series, this one is also presented in a 2.39:1 Cinemascope-style widescreen ratio.Īfter watching two episodes, the second of which recreates a very specific scene from the UK’s first episode, this is too much of a copy of the UK show for me, and based on these two, it doesn’t hold a candle to the original. Oh, and despite John Cusack ( Being John Malkovich) having top billing, he’s not in the first episode, but he is in it from the second. Whoever Christopher Denham is, I can see what he’s aiming for in his character’s search for the manuscript, but it doesn’t come off anywhere near as well. There are elements of violence, but no-one can perfect the weird and psychotic Arby like Neil Maskell in the original. I am obviously not going to go into details – especially prior to broadcast – but all I can say is that if you did enjoy the UK series, then you may not find enough to get stuck into with this series’ first episode. So, whereas the UK series started off with a bang and kept going, the US series feels very limp by comparison for the majority of the first episode, but in due course, it does start to hit home. Here, the same group of main characters all meet up at a convention – Samantha ( Jessica Rothe), Becky ( Ashleigh LaThrop), Ian ( Dan Byrd) and Wilson Wilson, finding themselves amongst others offering bids for Utopia, and for a number of those others who cosplay, they dress up as characters from it. And if you DID comply with their demands, it STILL didn’t end well for you. If you didn’t comply with their demands, it didn’t end well for you. The original started off with one of many memorable scenes, as Arby and Lee overstayed their welcome in a comic book shop on the hunt for Utopia. Several characters within a particular group are interested and, once again, there’s a Wilson Wilson ( Desmin Borges), the germophobe who always stayed off-grid and called himself by that name because he thought it was the most inconspicuous… even though it always seemed the complete opposite. In this case, they come across various pages of it in the house, and thinking if they can find more, they’ll make their fortune, especially since it’s the conclusion to another famous graphic novel, Dystopia. The original series was based around a bizarre graphic novel with the same name as the series and centred around a girl called Jessica Hyde ( Sasha Lane, in this case). This time round, a young couple move into a new house, but it’s full of junk from the previous owner. (Obviously, the US version is also just called ‘Utopia’, but, y’know, Google SEO.) ![]() By the way that ended – even with a cliffhanger – the expected drop in ratings led to its cancellation, even though a third series would’ve wrapped things up. ![]() Utopia 2020 is the American remake of British drama Utopia, which had an excellent – and surprisingly violent – first series, but then threw out any semblance of plot for the second series. ![]() The compressor unit is rechargeable, meaning you can plug it into the wall at home and charge it up in case you are going to a remote area for a race or trail run. ![]() This widens that gap back to the extent you'd expect, just based on the size difference. Partly because these technologies are also likely to have some benefit when they 'trickle up' to larger sensor sizes. The Canon G1 X Mark III offers an APS-C sensor to the G7 X Mark II's 1" sensor, but the latter uses a more efficient BSI design. Again, since most of the benefits of larger sensors come from them generally receiving more light during any given exposure, an increase in efficiency can help smaller sensors narrow this gap. The adoption of technologies such as back-side illumination have allowed sensors to become more efficient (capturing more of the light that's shone on them). We've seen some very good small sensors in recent years, whose performance can narrow the gap with those above them. At which point, the results will start to rival the output of larger sensors, so long as the combination of images and movement cancellation is clever enough. Unlike the shallow depth-of-field effect, which is simulated, these multi-shot techniques directly compete with larger sensors, since they allow the image to be constructed from more light. The same can be done in good light, sampling the scene several times (sometimes with different exposures), to extend the dynamic range beyond what could be achieved in a single exposure. The results will start to rival the output of The processing is getting sophisticated enough that this can even be done with moving subjects, without the user even necessarily realizing that this is what their phone is doing.īecause most noise in photography comes from the randomness of light, shooting the same scene again and again helps to average out this randomness, just as rolling a die repeatedly helps you get a clearer picture of whether it's weighted. Again, it's increasingly common for smartphones to be able to shoot multiple shots, then combine them. As well as simulated shallow depth-of-field, computational photography has added artificial lighting effects to the subject's face.Ĭomputational photography can also help with low light and high dynamic range scenes. This image was taken using Portrait mode on a modern smartphone. And for many applications, will quickly exceed the threshold of being considered ' good enough' for an increasing number of people. However, as processing power and machine learning continue to improve, the results will only get better. The results aren't always totally convincing and won't necessarily satisfy the kind of demanding photographer that looks for particular character to the out-of-focus rendering (bokeh) of their lenses. These use a variety of techniques but fundamentally they make some attempt to assess the depth in the scene, then apply differing amounts of blur at different depths, to simulate shallow depth-of-field. The most visible example of computational photography in widespread use are the portrait modes in the latest smartphones. But do these advances mean you no longer need a larger sensor? Computational photography They can't make up for the photographer, of course, but if used by the same person, the bigger sensor usually 'wins.'Ĭomputational photography allows small sensors to imitate the effects of a larger sensor, while leaps forwards in sensor performance can help small sensors produce better-looking images. Collectively, these three factors mean that large sensor cameras can usually produce better-looking images. Since these all primarily stem from getting more light, it presupposes that you have a lens with a wide-enough aperture to let in enough light, but this is usually possible. The three main benefits that prompt people to move to larger sensors are the ability to blur the background with shallow depth-of-field, exhibit less noise in low light situations and the ability to capture a wider dynamic range between the brightest and darkest areas of the image. To answer that question, let's look at why big sensors tend to produce better image quality and what smaller-sensored cameras and smartphones are doing to close the gap. Does that mean that bigger is no longer necessarily better? We've seen huge breakthroughs in the computational photography techniques in the latest smartphones, as well as the launch of some excellent small sensors in more traditional cameras. ![]() We will always keep it at 25% of the building’s capacity.” Even before the pandemic, we’ve had limited capacity. Invitees who choose to attend your well-named meeting have an easier time preparing for the meeting, and are thus more likely to show up prepared. If you’ve been in the workforce for more than five minutes you probably have heard a lot of meeting advice, such as “don’t schedule a meeting without an agenda.” But people who give advice on better meetings often overlook the lowly meeting name. Here is the sequence of events on the play that resulted in the Padres going from a 1-0 deficit to a 2-1 advantage: Shortstop Wander Franco was charged with two errors on the play, missing a throw to second that it appeared Tatis would have beat and sailing a throw home Tatis may or may not have beat. Tatis was on first base when Juan Soto dribbled a ball in front of home plate. Perhaps the most incredible thing about what Tatis did yesterday was how unsurprising it is that he was the one, in the words of Joe Musgrove, “kind of setting the tone for the whole game” with his bold run home in the third inning and then the one, in the words of Bob Melvin, making “the play of the game” throwing out a runner at the plate in the eighth inning. But what he did yesterday was sensational in its own right and more crucial to the outcome. ![]() What Tatis did in taking over Wednesday’s game against the Guardians was perhaps more remarkable. The Padres beat the Rays 5-4 yesterday in large part because Tatis dabbled in a bit of both types of chaos, where in certain moments he appears to operate in a different dimension than everyone else on the field. He refers often to the “chaos” he loves to create and the “chaos” in which he thrives. |
